Feedback from Huntingdonshire District Council on new Butchers FSM System

Following the Pennington report in 2009 it was evident that an alternative approach to the implementation and monitoring of HACCP requirements at our local butchers was required. In order to progress this, Huntingdonshire District Council Food Safety Team has worked closely with SFBB Systems Ltd to help develop and pilot the Butchers Food Safety Management System. Eight butchers’ shops took part in a pilot exercise between October and December 2010. The feedback from the businesses has been very positive and subsequent visits by officers have shown a marked improvement in understanding and compliance in the majority of premises.

Chris Lloyd, Food Safety Team Manger said:

‘The Butchers Food Safety Management System is an innovative and practical way for Butchers to develop a robust and effective HACCP based system. Those butchers who in the past have struggled with the complexities of HACCP and perhaps had a lack of understanding on how to document their existing systems have welcomed the new pack and have greatly benefited from the associated 1:1 coaching sessions. The projects success has meant that we are now actively promoting this scheme to all our local butchers.

The ongoing collaborative approach that SFBB systems has adopted between this council, the butchers and themselves is a positive model and brings mutual benefits’.
